MHMK has a highly experienced team with an established track record of investing in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Mr George Manyere (Zimbabwean) is the Founder and CEO of MHMK Capital. He also founded Brainworks in 2008 and was its Group CEO from formation until 1 February 2017. During his leadership, Brainworks grew to be recognised as a leading investment and corporate advisory company, with a strong presence in the following sectors in Zimbabwe: i) financial services; (ii) life insurance; (iii) hotel operations; (iv) real estate; (v) transport logistics; and (vi) advisory services. From its formation and up to the time when Mr Manyere stepped down as Group CEO, Brainworks grew exponentially in all key metrics, and notably the following: (i) 1,200 total staff employees; (ii) revenues of US$48.2 million; (iii) total shareholders’ funds of US$65.4 million; and (iv) total assets of US$162.8 million; (v) acquired and controlled 2 listed companies on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (African Sun Limited and Dawn Properties Limited); (vi) listed a start-up on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange, namely GetBucks Financial Services Limited, which grew to be the leading consumer lender in Zimbabwe; and (vii) successfully closed on approximately US$500 million in corporate advisory deals comprising of both debt and equity.
Mr Manyere was previously an investment professional with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), headquartered in Washington DC. While at IFC, he was responsible for investing in excess of US$600 million in sub-Saharan Africa, managing a portfolio of investments in excess of US$400 million, and he also represented IFC on several investee company boards. Mr Manyere trained as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in Zimbabwe, and holds a Bachelor and Honours degree in Accounting Science from the University of South Africa, as well as a Certificate in Theory of Accounting from the Institute of Chartered Accountants Zimbabwe.
Mr Manyere is a director of several companies, including some which are listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Johannesburg Stock Exchange and Zimbabwe Stock Exchange.
Chief Finance Officer
Mr Walter Kambwanji, CA (Zimbabwean) is the Chief Finance Officer of MHMK Capital. He is a Chartered Accountant (Zimbabwe) and holds a Bachelor of Accounting Science from the University of South Africa and a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Accounting from the University of Zimbabwe. Mr Kambwanji co-founded Brainworks Zimbabwe and has significant experience in finance and operations in Zimbabwe and internationally. Prior to co-founding Brainworks Zimbabwe in 2009, he was a professional in the finance department of HSBC in London.
Mr Kambwanji has previously been Finance Director of various companies in Zimbabwe, including BancABC Zimbabwe Limited, Renaissance Merchant Bank Limited, and Murray & Roberts Zimbabwe Limited. He sits on several boards of directors, which include Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (listed), African Sun Limited, Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (listed), Dawn Properties Limited, Zimbabwe Stock Exchange (listed), GetBucks Financial Services Limited, and Dawn Properties Consultants (Private) Limited.
Managing Director, Botswana / Deputy Group CEO
Ms Dudu Garekwe (Motswana) is a Deputy Chief Executive Officer of MHMK Capital. She has a wealth of experience in development finance, commercial and investment banking services, at senior and executive management positions, and has worked in Botswana, as well as internationally in The Gambia, Zimbabwe, and short assignments in India and England. Ms Garekwe headed Listing and Trading functions of Botswana Stock Exchange before joining Norsad Finance Ltd, (an impact investor with a focus on the SADC region), as Investment Principal.
Ms Garekwe has served on the boards of various institutions in Botswana, either as a member of the main board or a member of board committees – Botswana Post, PEEPA, Botswana Tourism Organisation, CEDA, to mention but a few.
Ms Garekwe holds a B Com degree from the University of Botswana, an MBA in Finance and Banking from the University of Manchester Business School, an Intermediate Diploma in Chinese Language (HSK 2) from the Confucius Institute/University of Botswana, in addition to being a Fellow of the Chartered Association of Certified Accountants (UK), Fellow of the Botswana Institute of Chartered Accountants, and an Associate of the Botswana Institute of Bankers.
Managing Director, South Africa / CIO – Private Equity
Mr Yeukai Gavaza (Zimbabwean) is Chief Investment Officer of MHMK Capital. He has over 11 years of investment experience, focusing primarily on sub-Saharan African markets. This is spread across a range of sectors, including the financial services, mining, telecommunications, industrial and FCMG sectors. His working career has encompassed asset management, private equity and sell-side research.
Prior to joining MHMK Capital, Mr Gavaza was a top-rated analyst at Investec Bank South Africa, covering the SSA financial services sector. He held a similar role at African Alliance, where he was top-rated in the 2014 Euromoney Africa Analyst survey and 2015 Financial Mail (FM) Analyst survey. He has extensively covered top banking firms in all key African markets such as Nigeria and Kenya.
Previously, Mr Gavaza had also worked at a pan-African focused hedge fund based in Johannesburg South Africa. There he co-managed a hybrid investment portfolio, investing in both quoted and private equity opportunities in all key African markets.
Mr Gavaza started his working career as an Investment Analyst with a Zimbabwean-based asset management firm, conducting research on all listed equity investments on the Zimbabwean Stock Exchange. He holds a B Com Hons in Actuarial Science and is a certified Financial Risk Manager (FRM).
Non Executive Director
Mr Ranga Makwata (Zimbabwean) is a highly experienced investment professional who has held several senior positions in the investment industry for over 13 years. Before joining MHMK as Managing Director, Mr Makwata was an Executive Director at Zfn Capital (Pvt) Ltd, a leading financial information provider and independent research provider. He was leading a team of financial researchers and analysts, and also overseeing the financial consultancy aspect of the business, focusing mainly on investor relations advisory and transaction advisory. Zfn has grown and thrived under his leadership, cementing its place as the go-to source financial information, research and review. He recently led Zfn to launch a new magazine focusing on investment issues.
Mr Makwata commenced his investment career with Mining Industry Pension Fund as an investments analyst, before going on to work for fund management firms, banking group and stock broking as Head of Research and Fund Manager mostly. His strengths are building relations within the market, as well as having a good analytical mind.
Mr Makwata has penned many newspaper and magazine articles and, for a long time, has been the leading analyst for two prominent business magazine published by the AMH group, namely Quoted Companies Survey, and Banks and Banking Survey. He recently co-authored an academic book entitled 'Zimbabwe Post Independence Economic Policies: A critical review', which is widely referenced within the academic sector. Mr Makwata holds a B Comm Finance Honours and MBA (Cum Laude) Degree from NUST. He is a CFA Charterholder, member of the CFA Institute, the CFA Society of South Africa, and the South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM). Mr Makwata is also a member on the board of trustees of the Investments Professionals Association of Zimbabwe. He is also an active volunteer in various programmes of the CFA Institute, and has represented Zimbabwe in various international forums of the global group of investment professionals.
Managing Director, Cranstoun Capital / CIO – Global Equities
Mrs Rewa Udoji has several years’ experience in the financial services sector across western and African markets. In her most recent role, she worked as the Group Head of Corporate Development and Investor Relations for a Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) listed company. Prior to this, she played various significant roles within the Old Mutual Group, including a Leadership Rotation into Mutual and Federal in South Africa within their corporate and niche business. Prior to this, she lead the strategy unit for Old Mutual Nigeria, and eventually expanded the portfolio to Old Mutual West Africa. After concluding the programme, she was appointed as the Specialty Insurance Executive at Old Mutual West Africa, responsible for setting up the specialty business across Nigeria and Ghana. She was previously a Management Consultant at Accenture in London, where she worked for a range of clients including HSBC, Santander, National Australia Bank and Royal Sun Alliance (RSA) on a number of business process improvement, target operating model, regulatory compliance, and system implementation projects.
Mrs Udoji holds a Bachelor of Science Degree from University College London (UCL) and has attended executive courses on 'Leading Change' and 'The Business of Africa' at Duke University and Gordon Institute of Business (GIBS). Most recently, Mrs Udoji founded Cranstoun, an investible platform for African institutional capital to invest in global equities, affording them a natural currency hedge and attractive growth potential.
Chief Risk Officer
Ms Susan Zindoga is the Chief Risk Officer of MHMK Capital. Ms Zindoga has over 10 years’ experience in banking, risk management, research, corporate finance, business modelling and ﬁnancial analysis. She has led and managed capital raising exercises, and has a thorough knowledge of equity and debt capital market transactions.
Prior to joining MHMK, Ms Zindoga was the Group Head of Treasury at Brainworks Capital Management (Private) Limited. She was responsible for debt and risk management, developing financial models, providing advisory services to the Group companies, preparing strategy packs for presentation to the board of directors, review of management practices and policies, and recommending changes to enhance operating efficiencies.
Ms Zindoga has research experience gained from working at Ecobank Transnational Incorporated, where her research focused on the banking sectors in East Africa and SADC. She is a holder of a Bachelor of Honours Degree in Applied Mathematics from the National University of Science and Technology, and a Postgraduate Certificate in Finance from the University of Leicester (UK).
Mr Julian Thatcher (British) is the General Counsel of MHMK Capital. He is a corporate lawyer and spent 7 years with Macfarlanes LLP, one of the City of London's leading law firms, where he was deputy head of the firm's Africa practice. During his time at Macfarlanes LLP, Julian advised on transactions in a range of countries (including in Africa) across a range of sectors including the financial services, energy, real estate, infrastructure, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, telecommunications and sports sectors.
Mr Thatcher also spent a year with Canaccord Genuity, the Canadian mining-focused investment bank, and he sat as an observer on the board of Brainworks Capital, the Mauritian holding company of the wider Brainworks group (the leading Zimbabwe private equity and advisory conglomerate).
Mr Thatcher is fluent in French and graduated with an honours degree from the University of Bristol in England, and thereafter received a distinction for his post-graduate studies at the BPP Law School in London.
Executive Director, Business Development & Operations
Mr Ranga Mtungwazi is a financial services professional whose current role is as an Executive Director for Business Development and Operations at MHMK Asset Management Zimbabwe. With a passion for investment and strong interpersonal skills, Mr Mtungwazi's 13 years working experience within the financial services industry spans both the broking, and the asset management sectors. Prior to his current engagement, Mr Mtungwazi was seconded to the Zimbabwean unit of Atria Africa as a Business Development Manager. Atria is a respected emerging market financial advisor and fund manager specializing in Africa. Its focus is predominantly on fund management, corporate and investment advisory, as well as private equity and investment holdings. Within this operational environment, he was primarily responsible for crafting business strategy, particularly related to client engagement, acquisition and retention. During a previous working stint as a Senior Dealer responsible for Sales and Execution at ABC Stockbrokers, Mr Mtungwazi made history when he managed to handle two of the single largest equity trades in the history of the Zimbabwe Stock Market. These were the $20 million Seedco (2014) and $40 million ABC/Atlas Mara (2015) block trades. This was in addition to his ongoing handling of significant equity trades.
Mr Mtungwazi launched his professional career in 2005 when he joined EFE securities in 2005 as a intern, and rose to become the Chief Dealer and Head of Sales and Execution in 2010. As head of Sales and Execution, he executed numerous significant trades on the ZSE. Mr Mtungwazi subsequently qualified and was licensed as a Stockbroker and Member of the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange in 2012. He is the holder of a Diploma in Financial Management (ACCA), B Sc. Political Science (University of Zimbabwe), Certificate in Investment and Portfolio Management (University of Zimbabwe), and is a member of the South African Institute of Financial Markets (SAIFM).
Executive Director, Portfolio Management
Ms Rufaro Sekeso (Zimbabwean) is the Director of Portfolio Management and Operations of MHMK Group. Ms Sekeso is a financial services professional with experience in private equity and investment, and corporate banking gained in Zimbabwe, the United Kingdom and Australia. Prior to joining MHMK, Ms Sekeso was the Group Head of Projects at Brainworks Capital, a Johannesburg Stock Exchange listed investment and corporate advisory company focused on Zimbabwe. At Brainworks, Ms Sekeso was responsible for all aspects of projects undertaken by Brainworks and its investee companies.
Ms Sekeso has previously worked for various financial institutions in London, including the Royal Bank of Scotland where she was a Senior Consultant, and at Gatehouse Bank, a Sharia compliant investment bank as AVP - Credit and Market Risk.
Ms Sekeso began her career in Australia as an insolvency professional and worked for the Australian Government before moving to PPB Advisory, a specialist corporate restructuring firm, where she was worked on a number of large scale voluntary administrations, insolvencies and receiverships.
Ms Sekeso holds a B Comm (Hons) Degree from Deakin University in Australia, and a Masters in Applied Finance from Charles Sturt University in Australia.
